Division of Public Safety >>
Diversity Initiatives

In our continual commitment to the Penn Community, Vice President Rush has made diversity a priority for the Division of Public Safety. The DPS mission statement illustrates our dedication to serving ALL members of society. Over the years, DPS has built strong partnerships throughout the University in order to address questions, fears and concerns regarding the relationship between minority communities, irrespective of race, ethnicity, nationality, sex, gender, sexual orientation, religion and ability.

DPS’s model for diversity awareness; from education and training, to recruitment and the hiring process, to the extensive network of community outreach programs and finally through a rigorous data analysis records management system, ensures that all members of Public Safety remain appropriately attentive and responsive to our Penn and the West Philadelphia neighborhoods.

The Division’s comprehensive diversity model’s effectiveness is continuously benchmarked by numerous organizations and higher educational institutions, including other well respected Ivy League Universities.

Over the years, the Division of Public Safety has built strong partnerships throughout the University in order to address questions, fears and concerns regarding the relationship between all minority communities (irrespective of race, ethnicity, nationality, sex, gender, sexual orientation, religion and ability) and the Division of Public Safety, particularly the Penn Police. History, perceptions and our life experiences, all matter when it comes to policing, security and community relationships, and we must continue to find ways to build trust and confidence with members of Penn’s diverse community.

The following reports detail on-going initiatives, services and trainings relating to diversity awareness and inclusion, dating back to the fall semester of 1999. Public Safety has worked diligently to implement a number of programs within the leadership of the Division, as well as with the University administration, that can be maintained continuously, irrespective of the rotating undergraduate and graduate populations at Penn.

Student, staff and faculty input is of great importance to all members of the Division of Public Safety. For suggestions, comments and questions about any of our programs, please contact the Office of the Vice President, at 215-898-7515.
